Sub-6kg Colnago Y1RS Full Build! 7.14kg -> 5.93kg Transformation
What Happens When You Go Weight-Weenie on an Aero Bike
Bike Build Showcase
Colnago Y1Rs before the sub-6kg project.
Most people look at a bike already running CeramicSpeed pulley wheels, Carbon-Ti chainrings, a Darimo seatpost, Scope wheelset and XTR rotors and think: that's a lovely build! About as lightweight as you might get.
At 7.14kg, it is already extremely competitive for an aero road bike, well ahead of anything stock.
Let's move the needle and aim for a sub-6kg Y1Rs!
For context, a standard Colnago Y1RS leaves the factory sitting somewhere between 7.51kg and 7.66kg, so this build already shaves 400-500g, which is a respectable feat.
Get ready, as we dive into the world of aftermarket upgrades to shave off an additional 1.21kg 👀
Wheels

The Scope Artech 4 Wheelset has been replaced for the Overfast Ultralight 50mm Wheelset, only 940g, astounding!
Tubeless Continental Aero Tyres to Panaracer Agilest Light (~190g each) and Panaracer Purple Lite TPU Tubes (36g each).
Stock XTR MT900 Rotors and Rotor Lock Ring were swapped out for the 74g Lightweight Rotors and 5.17g Rotor Lock Ring
Axles
Upgraded the axles to Sixweel's Colnago Titanium Thru-Axle (31g).

Thru-Axle Assembled!
Taking it to the next level with the Sixweel's Titanium Front Caliper Adapter with Ti-Parts Titanium Bolts (10g total).
Cassette
Installed the Neutron 11-30T Diamond-Like-Carbon (DLC) Cassette (163g).
Bottle Cages

Swapped out the bottle cages for EXS Titanium Bottle Cage (10g), with pink Ti-Parts Titanium Bottle Cage Bolts (1g each).
Drivetrain
Say goodbye, Carbon-Ti
Oh hi, 1x! Aluminium 7075 Chainring, paired with Elilee X310 Carbon Crankarms (310g) and slap on a YBN SLA-212 12-speed Titanium Chain (230g, world's lightest!).
Oh, not forgetting the XCadey power meter too!
Pedals

Running Look Keo Blades, we stealthily lost more weight - upgrading the stock axles for titanium ones and saving about 40g a pair.
Saddle
Selle Italia SLR 3D Carbon Saddle (~143g), gorgeous! But wait, it's being taken out??
To this?? Ha! The things we do to save weight.
Well, with the raw carbon saddle coming in at 60g, it is a significant weight saving... Hard to think it's ass-saving though 😅
Handlebar Zone
Many changes around the handlebar region, beginning with the computer mount.

The Ti-Parts Team Series 3D Printed Titanium Computer Mount (17g) takes centre stage. Coming in long form, lightweight yet practical as it can accommodate up to Garmin 1050/Wahoo Roam.
EXS Airtape (15g) is the clear choice, compared to popular tapes such as Supacaz Super Sticky Kush (~70-80g) or Lizard Skins (~50-74g).
But before we wrap on the Airtape, there's another marginal gain to be had!

Tada! Titanium Shifter Clamp Rings from Ti-Master!
Coming in at 3.4g, it is roughly 3g lighter than stock Dura-Ace clamp rings. Laughable, yes. But, it is a 50% weight reduction😏
Now we wrap the Airtape.
Holding it in place is a 2g Ti-Parts 3D-Printed Titanium Bar End Plug.
Battery Holder
Onto the last legs of the upgrade, we added the Overfast Ultralight Battery Holder Cover. A low-hanging fruit weight loss accessory, coming in at only 12g for the Shimano version 😃
The Result

Hooray! Would you just look at that build!
It looks like a bike that's not too obviously weight-weenie, until you zoom into the details.
If we could nitpick, perhaps the wheel profile could be slightly deeper for the aero look, but hey, that's a bike 800+g below the UCI limit 😉
Here's the final scale again:
Shh!🙊Don't call the UCI police.
I wonder how much faster Pogacar could be if he used this bike 🤔
Also, we did cheat a little bit by removing the pedals to get sub-6, 🤪 but that's the industry standard for manufacturers, hey?
That's it for today, hope you enjoyed this build!
Til next time,
Ride hard, ride safe.
