1. Front and rear axle length
2. Thread pitch
3. Is the contact area flat or convex?

12x100/12x142 refers to a diameter of 12mm, 100/142 refers to the frame(dropout) spacing, which is a standard. However, thread pitch and actual axle lengths are not standard and vary.
