How to Bleed Lewis SL/SLR Disc Brake Calipers

How to Bleed Lewis SL/SLR Calipers

Items for Preparation

  • Alcohol and cloth for cleaning
  • 2 and 3mm Allen/Hex Key
  • A rubber band
  • Bleeding funnel
  • Suitable brake fluid
  • Syringe

Steps

1) Attach the suitable adapter for the brake lever you are using to the bleeding funnel

2) Prepare the syringe full to the tip with suitable brake fluid

3) Remove retaining clip, brake pad pin, and brake pads from caliper and replace them with suitable bleeding blocks during the bleeding process

4) Remove bleed port screw from the caliper (don't lose any parts), attach the syringe.

5) Attach oil funnel to lever ensuring lever is at a slight angle tilted down.

6) Slowly push oil into the caliper until you see it appearing at the bleed funnel at the lever.

7) Manually add more oil into the bleed funnel.

8) Repeat process of pushing oil through the system several times until no air bubbles

9) Next steps very important for a perfect bleed: Use a rubber band to help hold the lever in the inwards position.

10) Slowly and very gently pull back on the syringe. You will notice the syringe does not fill with oil. Release the lever and we should see the oil flooding rom the funnel through the syringe and removing any last air bubbles.

11) We can then push the oil back in before allowing the rubber band to once again pull the lever.

12) Repeat the process several times. (It is crucial this process is done gently and not rushed to protect the brake diaphragm

13) After removing the rubber band, you can move some oil through the system and if no air bubbles are observed, the bleed is completed.

14) Plug the oil funnel before removing the syringe from the caliper and carefully replacing the bleed port screw.

15) Test the lever, although it's important to note that there will be more lever travel than usual at this phase.

16) Give the caliper a good clean and wipe down with alcohol before replacing the brake pads and rotor.

17) Final step is to plug and remove the oil funnel before replacing the bleed port screw and then giving the lever a clean to remove any oil residue.
